Advancing Public Health in Dentistry
The UCSF Open Smiles Collaborative curricula is designed to allow dentists recruited into either our UCSF Pediatric Dentistry or Dental Public Health programs to pursue expanded field site rotations in rural communities and discover innovative research projects

A unique and valuable aspect of our DPH and PD collaboration is that it provides the opportunity for expanded dual specialization for interested candidates.

If you are not initially accepted into our PD residency program, you are invited to apply to our DPH residency program. Those who have completed a DPH residency, will have preference for admission into our PD program. Upon completion of our PD program, dentists will be allowed to practice clinically and have the skills required for a career in DPH as well.

University Partnerships

Providing further support to our applicants is our partnerships with the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) and San Jose State University (SJSU)

If you are a dentist interested in Dental Public Health (DPH), UCSF has an agreement with UC Berkeley which allows you to attend UCB for one year to obtain your Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree. Upon completing your MPH degree, UCSF offers preferential acceptance into our DPH program.

Additionally, Pediatric Dentistry dentists have the option of pursing an MPH degree concurrently with the UCSF PD residency program. We have an agreement with SJSU that allows you to attend UCSF for your PD residency while attending SJSU for your MPH degree. Following completion of your MPH and PD programs, you will have an increased chance of acceptance into the UCSF DPH program.
